Real “Storeys” Inspiration
Having been inspired by the Late Mr Lee Kwan Yew’s words – “It does not matter how much you earn but what you save and spend wisely on makes a difference”, Mr Govindan Samy, an 81-year old security guard, has been donating to SINDA and other charities regularly. Over and above his regular donations to various charities, including SINDA, Mr Samy contributes monthly to SINDA and NKF. In December 2017, for his 80th birthday celebrations, Mr Samy donated S$80,000 to SINDA, Singapore Children’s Society, Singapore Tamil Movement and Sree Narayana Mission (Singapore). Mr Samy is from a humble background and worked at Singapore Power as a control operator for 42 years until his retirement in 1999 at the age of 62. After a three year break, Mr Samy decided to rejoin the workforce in 2003, this time as a relief security officer and pulls 12-hour shifts, till this day. He lives with his wife in their 4-room HDB flat in Jurong West, has a 51 year old son, 48 year old daughter and three grandchildren. He continues to do his daily household chores by himself and has never owned a washing machine. He ensures he keeps fit by jogging for half an hour before getting ready for work daily.
